ARTICLE I - NAME OF ORGANIZATION

The name of this organization shall be the Sam Houston State University Student Nurses Association (SHSU SNA).

Mission Statement: SNA's mission is to convey the standards, ethics, and skills that students will need as responsible and accountable leaders and members of the nursing profession.

 

ARTICLE II — PURPOSE AND FUNCTION

Section I. Purpose

  1. To assume responsibility for contributing to nursing education in order to provide for the highest quality of health care.
  2. To provide programs representative of fundamental interests and concerns to nursing students.
  3. To aid in the development of the whole person, including his/her professional role and his/her responsibility for health care of people in all walks of life.

 

Section II. Function

  1. To have direct input into standards of nursing education and influence the education process.
  2. To influence health care, nursing education and practice through legislative activities as appropriate.
  3. To promote and encourage participation in community affairs and activities towards health care and the resolution of related social issues.
  4. To represent nursing students to the consumer, to institutions, and other organizations.
  5. To promote and encourage students' participation in interdisciplinary activities.
  6. To promote and encourage recruitment efforts, participation in student activities, and educational opportunities regardless of a person's race, color, creed, national origin, ethnicity, age, gender, marital status, sexual orientation, disability, or economic status.
  7. Promote and encourage collaborative efforts with the National Student Nurses Association, American Nurses Association, National League for Nursing, International Council of Nurses, Texas Nursing Students Association, Texas Nurses Association, as well as other nursing and related health care organizations.
  8. To promote and encourage continuous collaborative relationships with nursing and health-related organizations post-graduation.

 

ARTICLE III - MEMBERS

Section I. Eligibility for Membership

There shall be three (3) classes of membership: active, associate, and individual.

  1. Active Members:
  2. Include nursing students enrolled at SHSU School of Nursing (SON).
  3. Students enrolled in Texas State Board of Nurse Examiners approved programs leading to licensure as a Registered Nurse. (May include Registered Nurses enrolled in programs leading to a Baccalaureate degree with a major in nursing)
  4. Shall have all the privileges of membership
  5. Shall be eligible for appointed or elected office.
  6. May vote and have full voice in association business.

 

  1. Associate Members:
  2. Shall include Pre-nursing students, including Registered Nurses, enrolled in SHSU.
  3. Shall have all privileges of membership, EXCEPT the right to hold the offices of President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer at any level: local, state, or national level.

 

  1. Individual Members
  2. Shall be open at the state and national level to any eligible student when membership in a constituent association is not available.
  3. Shall have all the privileges of active membership, except the right to hold office.
  4. Have no voting privileges.
  5. Include any faculty members appointed to serve as faculty advisors. Alternate faculty advisors may be appointed by the Board of Officers as needed to serve on special committees.

 

Section II. Dues

Dues are comprised of 2 components; SHSU chapter dues and NSNA national dues.

  1. SHSU Dues
  2. To maintain membership in SNA, active and associate members must pay the dues outlined by the Board of Officers each semester
  3. All dues are payable by the second general body meeting of the semester
  4. Any member who fails to pay current dues shall forfeit all privileges of SNA membership.
  5. Graduating senior students must pay dues to the SNA to be eligible to receive their graduation cord.

 

  1. NSNA Dues

 

  1. Active and associate members will pay their own NSNA dues to gain membership into the NSNA. These dues will be payable directly to NSNA via their website
  2. Any member who is not a paid NSNA member for a minimum of 12 consecutive months shall forfeit all privileges of membership in NSNA.
  3. Graduating senior students must be a current paid NSNA member or have demonstrated membership for 12 consecutive months to receive their graduation cord.

 

Section III. Membership Extensions

 

Active and associate NSNA membership may be extended six months beyond graduation from a student's program in nursing, providing membership was renewed while the student was enrolled in a nursing program.

 



Section IV: Rights and Responsibilities of Members

 

  1. Active and associate members of SHSU SNA have the following rights and responsibilities:

 

  1. Participate in deliberations of the business brought before the Association.
  2. Serve on standing and special committees as elected or appointed within the school, university, state, or national level.
  3. Has access to all minutes of the Board of Officers and standing or special committees of SHSU
  4. Only active members who are in ‘Good Standing’ status for the semester have the right to run for office.
  5. Only active members have the right to vote.
  6. It is the responsibility of the membership to obtain updates to the general meeting online on Org Link on social media.
  7. Students who maintain active status for three (3) semesters and have paid all chapter dues including their final semester, are eligible to receive the SNA graduation cord. For example, if you are an active member in good standing for the J1 ,J2 and S2 semesters, you would be eligible to receive the SNA graduation cord.

 

Section V: Membership Volunteer Hours

 

  1. Active and associate members shall be required to complete the assigned number of community service hours per semester of membership as determined by the Board of Officers.
  2. The due date for the completion of these hours will be set forth by the Project Coordinators and approved by the school association Board of Officers. The due date may differ between the graduating cohort and the remaining cohorts.
  3. The acceptable modes to obtain volunteer hours will be set forth by the school association Board of Officers each semester.
  4. Members are required to complete the SHSU SNA Membership Contract at the beginning of each semester before completing any and all volunteer hours.
  5. Board members have the right to review: accept or reject, hours on a case-by-case basis.
  6. Board members must complete 5 hours of volunteer service per semester.

 

Section VI: Delegates

 

  1. Purpose and Function

 

  1. To serve as a delegate at TNSA or NSNA, said delegate must be an active member of SHSU SNA and a paid NSNA member.
  2. Delegate conference fees will be subsidized by the SHSU SON as per the policy and procedure and pending financial stability as deemed by the current Board of Officers.

  1. Delegate representation at TNSA and NSNA is outlined in their respective bylaws.

 

Section VII. Membership Meeting Attendance

 

  1. Active and associate members shall be required to attend three (32) meetings per semester if membership. At least one (1) of these meetings per semester must have a guest speaker.
  2. The school association Board of Officers shall have the authority to change SNA meeting attendance requirements.
  3. Any member who fails to attend the required number of meetings shall forfeit all privileges of membership as outlined in Article III: Section IV.

 

Section VIII. Membership Good Standing

 

  1. If members pay full membership dues, including, optionally, NSNA dues; complete the required number of community service hours each semester, and meet the attendance requirements,
  2. The school association Board of Officers shall decide each appeal on an individual basis.

 

Section IX. Conferences

 

Any member, officer or general body, may be eligible for TNSA/NSNA conference attendance reimbursement as outlined in appendix A.
 .

ARTICLE IV: OFFICERS

Section I. Composition

The school association Board of Officers will consist of the Executive Officers: President, Vice President(s), Secretary(s), Treasurer(s), Project Coordinator(s), Fundraiser(s), and Historian(s).  New board positions may be added as the current Board deems necessary.  The Board also has the right to convene task forces and other committees as necessary.

Section II. Qualifications/Eligibility

  1. Candidacy for all offices except that of President shall be open to those candidates who are nursing students currently enrolled in the SHSU SON program throughout the academic calendar year for the full term of office held.
  2. Candidacy for President is reserved for only those candidates who have held a previous office position on the school association Board of Officers.
  3. All school association Board of Officers are required to maintain academic good standing each semester of their term. This requires maintaining a GPA of 3.0 or above.
  4. Nominees are required to complete the approved nomination form and submit to the President by the third general body meeting.
  5. At the start of each semester each board member of the school association Board of Officers will be required to submit an unofficial transcript to the SHSU SON Faculty Advisor for review.
  6. Students who hold a Board position will be required to resign their Board position for at least one (1) semester if their GPA falls below a 3.0, they fail a course, or withdraw from the program. Should a student who holds a Board position fail the first exam in any course that Board member will be placed on probation. If the Board member fails a second consecutive exam, that student will be automatically removed from their board position. Article V, Section II – Removal from Office Procedure – will not apply.

 

Section III. Term of Office

  1. The term of office shall be one (1) semester.
  2. No elected officer shall serve more than two (2) terms in the same position.
  3. No officer may hold the position of President or Vice-President at the local level concurrently while serving as a State Officer. A state or nationally elected President or Vice-President will have forty-five (45) days to resign their local chapter position or they will be ineligible to serve at the state or national level. In the case of the President resigning, the Vice-President will step into the President’s position. Any other SNA open board positions in this circumstance may be appointed. Appointed positions are held for the remainder of the semester only. To retain an appointed position after a semester, one must run for election.
  4. Elections for open positions will be held each semester.
  5. If a current board member wishes to change their position, they will forfeit their position and must run for the new position.
  6. A current board member occupying a position on the board, may elect to stay in the same position without running provided they are abiding by Article IV, Section 3, Item B and not in the same position for more than 2 terms.
  7. New candidates running for a board member position may only do so as an incoming Junior 1, Junior 2, Senior 1 and Senior 2 nursing student. All new candidates must be able to serve the full term of office.

Section IV. Quorum

Quorum shall be the President and/or Vice-President and other executive board members so that a minimum representation of executive officers is 60% of the total executive officer board.

Section V. Commitment

  1. Each officer shall sign a contract of commitment at their point of election stating that they will perform the duties of their position.
  2. Officers agree to attend all general and board meetings as scheduled.
  3. A transitional meeting is to be held immediately following 4th general body meeting where the handoff of office information and binders will take place.
  4. It shall be the responsibility of each officer to maintain records of activities, which shall be passed to incoming officers after each election.
  5. If an officer's performance is questionable or fails to maintain appropriate academic standards (i.e., inactivity, more than two (2) unexcused absences from meetings) the Board of Officers may hold a special meeting to review whether the officer is fit to remain on the Board. The officer in question will be present at the meeting and have the opportunity to state their case but will abide by the decision of the Board of Officers.

 

ARTICLE V: DUTIES OF OFFICERS

At least one (1) officer is expected to attend the SHSU Leadership Initiatives student organization trainings at the beginning of the semester.  Members may be excused for class conflicts only.

Officers exiting a position are expected to orient newly elected board members and to maintain an up-to-date Officer binder.  Officer binders shall be turned in to the newly elected board members at the last general body meeting of the semester. 

 

Section I. Executive Officers

  1. President
    1. Shall preside at all meetings of this association, except committee meetings.
    2. Appoint chairpersons of committees as needed, with the approval of the school Association Board of Officers.
    3. Initiate new programs or changes in the bylaws to be voted upon and enacted by majority vote.
    4. Be responsible for review and approval of all correspondence representing SHSU SNA.
    5. Be the official representative of SHSU SNA in all matters.
    6. Represent SHSU SNA at local, state, and national nursing associations as able.
    7. Represent SHSU SNA at functions such as Saturdays at (a) Sam and Bearkats All Paws In as able.
    8. Represent SHSU SNA during orientation of new SHSU SON students.
    9. Make agendas for all meetings (board and body).
    10. Act as liaison between students, faculty, and Director of Nursing.
    11. Schedule semester meetings with Director of Nursing to share goals and activities (i.e. volunteer opportunities, membership status for upcoming term of office).
    12. Communicate inadequacies and policy infractions to fellow officers.
    13. Final review and assent of members for good standing.
    14. Attend or designate a board representative to the University Student Organization Mandatory meeting at the beginning of each semester.
    15. Shall have the authority to convene any meeting deemed necessary of the school association Board of Officers as deemed necessary and shall notify the general membership of such meeting, location, and time with at least one week in advance.
    16. Shall review the Bylaws each August

 

  1. Vice President
  1. Shall assume responsibility of the office of President in the event of the vacancy occurring in the office until the next regular election.
  2. Shall preside at meetings in the absence of the President.
  3. Shall assist the President as delegated and act as adviser to the President, Book all rooms for meetings and functions.
  4. Shall edit the Bylaws as needed by the Board of Officers.
  5. Overseeing financial audit within two months of end of semester.

 

  1. Secretary
  2. Using SON minute's template shall record and distribute the minutes, of board meetings within 10 days of meeting. Minutes must be distributed by email to the board and faculty advisors and stored in electronic format.  A copy of the minutes should be placed in the officer binder. 
  3. Shall record and distribute the general body meeting minutes to OrgLink within 10 days of meeting.
  4. Shall keep on file as a permanent record all reports, papers, and documents.
  5. Refer to duly appointed committees the necessary records for the completion of business.
  6. Deliver to the newly elected Secretary all association papers.
  7. Bring sign-in sheet to body meetings, record attendance on the approved documentation of the Board of Officers.
  8. Complete a revised Master list of all members in good standing each semester and forward to the President.
  9. Shall request a list of NSNA membership several times each semester.
  10. Shall keep accurate master record of active member status each semester.

 

  1. Treasurer
  2. Shall serve as chairperson of the budget/finance committee.
  3. Shall submit financial reports to the membership as directed by President.
  4. Prepare a budget at the beginning of the semester and present to the Board of Officers at the first board meeting for approval by vote.
  5. Prepare financial reports submitted at the monthly school association Board of Officers Meeting.
  6. Keep a permanent record of all dues received from members and any other income and expenses (including receipts for purchases and disbursements)
  7. Shall deposit all of the monies received to the designated bank.
  8. Remit payment for approved debits
  9. Reviewing monetary disbursements, acquisitions, and fundraising activities.
  10. No funds will be disbursed without prior approval.

 

  1. Project Coordinator(s)
  2. Assume responsibility for organizing a committee to plan community service projects (optional based on need)
  3. Organize at least one community service project per month and one major project annually plus Bearkat All Paws In and Saturdays at Sam.
  4. Maintain record of SNA member's volunteer hours and relay to the Board of Officers for determination of active member status.
  5. Keep community contacts and needs information up-to-date in a binder.
  6. Attend university student community service meetings as needed.

 

  1. Historian
  2. Shall update members in the following ways:
    1. Posting on Orglink and social media with upcoming events, meetings, and speakers.
    2. Emailing all members 1 week before and 1 day before all general body meetings,
  3. Update bulletin boards in the lobby of all School of Nursing buildings.
  4. Create communication materials for any events and to promote the involvement in SHSU SNA
  5. Shall take pictures or designate a helper to photograph at as many events as they are able to attend, especially Bearkat All Paws In and Saturday at Sam.
  6. These pictures may be posted on the bulletin boards and any other affiliated sites, such as Facebook and Orglink. (Reminder: These pictures should reflect HIPAA regulations).
  7. Shall have all members complete the consent to photography release at the beginning of each Semester.
  8. Shall be in charge of running elections in the following ways:
    1. Create election ballots.
    2. Inform the membership about elections process.
  9. Approve new members in OrgLink

 

  1. Fundraiser
  2. Coordinate fundraising events to support SHSU SNA activities including conference attendance.
  3. Create innovative ideas to raise funds for organization.
  4. Assist to recruit new members for SNA.

 

Section II. Removal from Office

  1. Members of the school association Board of Officers who have missed two or more regularly scheduled meetings (board or general) or one community service activity to which they signed up for within the semester will be invited to a special meeting of the Board of Officers for review of eligibility to maintain board position. This meeting must take place within 2 weeks of the second absence. All executive board members, one committee chair, and one faculty advisor must be present for a vote to occur
  2. An officer (executive or committee) may also be removed from office by a plurality vote of two thirds (2/3) of the members of the school association Board of Officers present at a meeting called for that purpose if that officer is deemed negligent in the functions of that office as stated in these bylaws.
  3. After a board member misses one meeting or a Community Service event, they must be notified within week of the absence via email by the president of the current bylaws for removal from office as a warning.

 

 

ARTICLE VI - ELECTIONS

Section I. Nominations

  1. A call for nominations will be made and posted online and sent via email at least 2 days prior to the meeting.
  2. Nominees must be enrolled in the SON or be admitted for the semester of tenure.
  3. Nominees shall be an active member in SHSU SNA.
  4. Nominee must be in good academic standing with a GPA of 3.0 or higher in the School of Nursing.
  5. Nominee should express their desire to run for Officer to the President, in writing, by the announced date to be considered for the position.

 

Section II. Elections

  1. Students who desire to run for office should submit their names and applications to the board by the announced due date.
  2. Nominees will be vetted for eligibility via the faculty advisor.
  3. Once the applicant's eligibility is confirmed, nominee names, election platforms, etc. may be sent to the Historian who will post the information in the medium as decided by the Board.
  4. A voting member will have only one vote in any election.
  5. If a board member were to be removed or resigns from office, the next runner up during the previous election may take his/her place by a 2/3-majority vote of the current members of the Board of Officers. If he/she is not elected by the Board, a new election process will take place including voting procedures for the replacement of that office.
  6. Nominees and acceptance of nomination must be submitted in writing to the Secretary within one week of office.

 

ARTICLE VII: AMENDMENTS

These bylaws may be amended as needed by a 2/3 vote of members present and voting provided that notice of the proposed amendments has been presented in-person to the school association Board of Officers meeting prior to the spring or fall meeting or by signed email at least three (3) weeks prior to said meeting.

 

ARTICLE IX: GRIEVANCE PROCESS:

If an active member has a complaint about a change in the bylaws, they must hand a formally typed or handwritten letter to one of the committee members who will then present the letter at the next board meeting. The member must be present at the next SNA meeting in order to receive a response from the board. There will be a limited time frame for questions and concerns.

ARTICLE X - RISK MANAGEMENT

In addition to the following items outlined below, the SHSU SNA adheres to the Risk Management Guidelines in the SHSU Student Guidelines for organizational practice. 

  1. SHSU SNA is not responsible for illness or injury resulting from travel to or from events or participation in any events organized by the Association or on behalf of another organization.
  2. SHSU SNA is a drug and alcohol-free organization. Any person who attends any SHSU SNA event and is suspected to be under the influence of any illicit or illegal substance will result in dismissal from the event and may result in loss of membership in good standing status at the discretion of the Executive Officers.
  3. When volunteering at events or attending meetings either on or off university property, SHSU SNA members must adhere to all policies of the hosting organization, Valuables must be stored properly in all settings
  4. Any acts that the Board of Officers deem as hazing will result in loss of SHSU SNA membership and will be reported to Student Activities.
  5. Sexually abusive behavior on the part of its members or affiliates, whether physical, mental or emotional will not be tolerated.
  6. All organizations and their leaders shall review semi-annually the Risk Management Guidelines as above and the University’s policy on Sexual Harassment and Sexual Assault. These policies are found in “Student Guidelines” of Sam Houston State University and binding on all student organizations, its members and affiliates.

 

ARTICLE XI - PARLIAMENTARY AUTHORITY

All meetings of this association shall be conducted according to the parliamentary law as Set forth in Robert's Rules of Order Newly Revised where the rules apply and are not in conflict with these bylaws.

Appendix A (approved 8/23/2018)

SNA Procedure for Scholarship for Membership to attend State or National Conference

 

Purpose:

SHSU SNA supports the attendance of it’s membership to State and National Conferences.  The scholarship awards funding to assist students to attend Texas Nursing Student Association and National Student Nurse Association Conferences.

 

 

Criteria:

The students eligible for assistance must meet the following criteria:

 

●       Have paid their semester dues.

●       Be a paid member of NSNA (National conference criteria only).

●       Completed and submitted the volunteer contract at least 5 weeks prior to the conference.

●       Have attended one (1) meeting before the conference.

●       Have completed five (5) volunteer service hours at least 2 weeks prior to the conference.

 

 

Guidelines:

Students must submit the application form at least 4 weeks prior to the conference and be in good standing in all classes (honor system).  Students will receive reimbursement for conference fee as per “amount” below.  All remainder of expenses will be the student’s responsibility.  Proof of attendance (i.e. conference registration receipt, registration material and/or name badge) must be submitted for reimbursement.  Requests for reimbursement must be completed and submitted within 7 days of return from the conference to be eligible.  Upon return, students receiving reimbursement will be asked to make a brief statement about one thing they learned at conference.

 

Amount:

Each scholarship awarded is based on available funding at the beginning of the semester as per approved budget by the board.  Therefore, the number of students who may attend conference will be limited to first come, first served basis and who meet the criteria (outlined above).  Students will be reimbursed their conference fee.

Appendix B (approved 09/28/2023)

SNA Procedure for New Graduate Sponsor Scholarship 

Purpose:

SHSU SNA supports the success of SNA active members after graduation. The scholarship awards funding for two students to reimburse graduation expenses or assist graduating students to sit for the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX).

 

 

Criteria:

The students eligible for assistance must meet the following criteria:

 

●       Have paid their semester dues each semester.

●       Completed required volunteer hours each semester.

●       Be an active member for 3 or more semesters.

●       Demonstrate Academic excellence with a minimum GPA of 3.0.

●       Accrued no disciplinary measures while attending SHSU SON.

●       Demonstrates excellent character that aligns with SNA values and expectations.

●       Students will disclose membership in all other SHSU organizations (clubs, sororities, committees, student worker positions).

●       Students will provide proof of NSNA membership (if applicable).

●       Students will disclose the total number of volunteer hours completed as an SNA member.

●       Students will submit a 200-500 word essay “How I demonstrate SHSU moral character in my experience as a student and SHSU SNA member throughout nursing school.

Guidelines:

Students must submit the application form, supporting documentation, and essay 2 weeks before the third general body meeting and be in good standing in all classes (honor system). Student identification numbers will be used as identifiers during the selection process to reduce bias. SNA board members will not identify their board member positions on the application to reduce bias. Advisors will assist the SNA board to select a candidate based on merit and character. Faculty advisors will make the final determination of scholarship recipients. Once recipients are selected GPA, volunteer hours, and NSNA membership (optional) will be verified before announcement.

 

 

Instructions:

Applicants will submit documentation to the SNA faculty representatives through blackboard. Applicants MUST ensure that ALL submitted documentation includes the Student Identification Number (not the name of the applicant) to reduce bias in the selection process. The subject line of the email will read student ID number, First Name Last Name Scholarship Application (1234567890 Jane Doe Scholarship Application). Submit completed application and essay in one document. Submit proof of NSNA membership as a separate document. Failure to follow instructions will disqualify applicants from scholarship consideration. Once recipients are selected, GPA, volunteer hours, and NSNA membership (optional) will be verified before announcement.

 

 

Amount:

Two students will be awarded $250.00 (each) at the last general body meeting in the form of a personal check and scholarship certificate.

SNA Membership Contract

As an SNA member, you are required to obtain 10 hours of volunteer services per semester to receive Active Member Status. The member must follow these set terms and conditions. This contract must be completed, signed, and returned to the Project Coordinator(s) each semester prior to volunteering.

  1. Volunteer hours may be obtained through SNA approved events only. A list is provided at the beginning of the semester and updated regularly. If you would like to suggest an event for approval, please submit your request to the Project Coordinator(s) at least 7 days prior to the event date. Suggestion of an event does not imply approval.
  2. Sign up for any event may be done at any general meeting or by emailing the Project Coordinator(s) via SHSU email. Communication by Facebook or text is not appropriate.
  3. If you are unable to attend an event you signed up for, you must email the Project Coordinator(s) at least 24 hours in advance to avoid penalty. Exception: Bearkat All Paws In and Saturday @ Sam require 1 week cancellation notice to avoid penalty.
  4. If canceling the day of the event, contact the Project Coordinator(s) by phone.   Cancellation the day of an event or not showing up to event (no call, no show) will result in a penalty. Penalty is EITHER deducting the amount of hours you originally signed up for (which may result in negative hours that would add to the original 10 required per semester) OR paying $10 for each hour you had previously committed to.
  5. If you are late you to an event, you must notify the Project Coordinator(s) by phone. Late arrival may have repercussions, which will be at the board’s discretion and may result in loss of hours.
  6. You must wear your SNA T-shirt to all volunteer events or an SHSU T-shirt if you have not received the official SNA T-shirt by the time of the event.
  7. At the events, you must check in and out with a Board Member. If a Board Member is not present, you must submit your evidence of volunteering. There are a couple ways to complete this evidence: 
    1. A picture can be taken at the beginning and end of event and a picture of the sign in/out sheet (if applicable). This must be sent via email during the time of event.
    2. A sign in sheet will be assigned to a designated member and members will sign in/out with this person. After completed, the designated member can send a picture to the Project Coordinator(s) via email.
  8. To obtain credit for attendance, regardless if a board member is present or not, all volunteer hours must be logged into “Orglink” within 7 days of the event day by 11:59 pm (2359) of the 7th day.
  9. A minimum of 8 hours must be obtained through volunteer work and submitted onto Orglink. Members can donate a maximum amount equivalent to 2 hours to complete the required 10 hours. You will not be able to buy out your hours until the last general body meeting of the semester. The maximum of 2 hours allowed to be purchased through donation, will be for the price of $10 worth of items for one hour of time. You must contact the Project Coordinator(s) to obtain a list of acceptable items for purchase. These items are specific to the needs of the agency who will receive the donation. The items must be brought to the last General Body meeting in order to receive credit.
  10. All graduating members must have all hours submitted by the Saturday after the last General Body meeting.

Board Member Contract

I, ________________________________________, as an SHSU SNA Board Member will abide by the following:

● Officers agree to read and follow the SHSU SNA bylaws.

● Officers agree to attend all general and board meetings as scheduled.

● Fulfill the duties of the elected office and all others as required as outlined by the SNA Bylaws as outlined in Article V, Section I. Executive Officers.

● Pay dues to SHSU SNA as required to obtain ‘good standing’ membership status

● Pay dues to NSNA for at least one (1) 12-month period.

● Complete volunteer hours as required to obtain ‘good standing’ membership status.

● If an officer’s performance is questionable (i.e., inactivity, unexcused absence from meetings) the Board of Directors will hold a special meeting to review the matter. The officer in question will be present at the meeting and will have to abide by the decision of the Board of Directors as outlined in Article V, Section II Removal from Office.

● It shall be the responsibility of each officer to maintain records of contacts, receipts, duties, “how-to’s” etc. in the binder provided and to pass the binder, completed, to the incoming officer after election. The outgoing officer will have a face-to-face meeting with the incoming officer to transition into the role.

SNA Procedure for New Graduate Sponsor Scholarship

 

Purpose:

SHSU SNA supports the success of SNA active members after graduation. The scholarship awards funding for two students to reimburse graduation expenses or assist graduating students to sit for the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX).

Criteria:

The students eligible for assistance must meet the following criteria:

 

●       Have paid their semester dues each semester.

●       Completed required volunteer hours each semester.

●       Be an active member for 3 or more semesters.

●       Demonstrate Academic excellence with a minimum GPA of 3.0.

●       Accrued no disciplinary measures while attending SHSU SON.

●       Demonstrates excellent character that aligns with SNA values and expectations.

●       Students will disclose membership in all other SHSU organizations (clubs, sororities, committees, student worker positions).

●       Students will provide proof of NSNA membership (if applicable).

●       Students will disclose the total number of volunteer hours completed as an SNA member.

●       Students will submit a 200-500 word essay “How I demonstrate SHSU moral character in my experience as a student and SHSU SNA member throughout nursing school.

 

Guidelines:

Students must submit the application form, supporting documentation, and essay 2 weeks before the third general body meeting and be in good standing in all classes (honor system). Student identification numbers will be used as identifiers during the selection process to reduce bias. SNA board members will not identify their board member positions on the application to reduce bias. Advisors will assist the SNA board to select a candidate based on merit and character. Faculty advisors will make the final determination of scholarship recipients. Once recipients are selected GPA, volunteer hours, and NSNA membership (optional) will be verified before announcement.

 

 

Instructions:

Applicants will submit documentation to the SNA faculty representatives through blackboard. Applicants MUST ensure that ALL submitted documentation includes the Student Identification Number (not the name of the applicant) to reduce bias in the selection process. The subject line of the email will read student ID number, First Name Last Name Scholarship Application (1234567890 Jane Doe Scholarship Application). Submit completed application and essay in one document. Submit proof of NSNA membership as a separate document. Failure to follow instructions will disqualify applicants from scholarship consideration. Once recipients are selected, GPA, volunteer hours, and NSNA membership (optional) will be verified before announcement.

 

 

Amount:

Two students will be awarded $250.00 (each) at the last general body meeting in the form of a personal check and scholarship certificate.
